Analyzing Eben Alexander, Part 4: Next Level Soul (2026): a podcast microphone and a laptop showing an Eben Alexander interview beside four stacked case folders, with a running total of 20 coma elements and 22 near-death experience elements across all tellings

Analyzing Eben Alexander, Part 4: Next Level Soul (2026)

Continuing with the Analyzing Eben Alexander project. On September 22, 2026, the Next Level Soul podcast posted “Neurosurgeon DIES: Says The AFTERLIFE Judges You From The People You HURT (NDE),” host Alex Ferrari’s second interview with Eben Alexander. It runs about 70 minutes, and as of this writing, it has more than 122,000 views. The two men recorded it ahead of the IANDS conference in Bellevue, Washington, where both were scheduled as keynote speakers. My analysis is based on the transcript of the video.

This is the newest telling in the series so far, recorded almost 18 years after his coma. If you’re new here, start with Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3. Part 1 explains the sorting standards in full. The short version: if it’s something a physical body does, feeling, hearing, smelling, or sensing the passage of time, it comes from the coma. If it’s something only a soul free of the body does, it comes from the near-death experience.

In Part 3, I said every new telling adds bricks to the building, and that the analysis ends when the bricks stop being new. This telling is where that starts to happen.

Fear Coma Experience Elements: New

None. For the first time in this series, a telling contains no coma elements I haven’t already logged. Every one of them shows up below, as a repeat.

Fear Coma Experience Elements: Repeats

The Earthworm’s Eye View – “It started in Earthworm’s eye view, primitive, coarse, unresponsive starting point.” Seen in Parts 1, 2, and 3. Coma.

Gross and Muddy – “Like being in dirty jello, kind of very murky.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. A new texture this time. Jello is something you feel, thick and wet against the skin. Tactile, coma.

The Melody – “I was rescued by a slowly spinning white light associated with a perfect musical melody.” Later: “By remembering the musical notes of the melody, I could conjure up that light portal.” Seen in Parts 1, 2, and 3. Sound, coma. He also says music “ended up being a terribly important theme in my journey because it’s basically how I could navigate these spiritual realms.” The music did more than set the mood. In his own telling, it moved him between the two sources.

The Butterfly Wing – “I was a speck of awareness on a butterfly wing.” Seen in Parts 1, 2, and 3. Coma.

The Dancing Crowd – “There were thousands of beings down below dancing. In the writings weeks later, I call them souls between lives. And I remember in all that festivity and joyous celebration, there were children playing, dogs jumping, incredible festivities.” Seen in Part 3. Same scene, now with a label he applied weeks after the fact. Thousands of strangers, random dogs, kids at play. His brain building heaven out of a park. Coma.

Hymns – “Up above were these swooping orbs, angelic choirs emanating chants and anthems, hymns that would thunder through my awareness.” Seen in Parts 2 and 3. The orbs are NDE. The hymns are music, heard. Coma.

The Beings in the Distance – “The last things I saw in my journey, one was being surrounded by thousands of beings going off in the distance, and this occurred back down to that earthworm eye view realm, where it all started in the first place.” Seen in Part 3, where the same beings bowed their heads, held candles, and murmured prayers. The candles and prayers are missing this time. The location is the same: the bottom, in the muck. Coma.

The Six Faces – “The last thing I saw, six faces. They would bubble up out of the muck in that earthworm eye view, say a few words that I couldn’t understand because my amnesia was still very powerful, and then they drop back into the muck.” Seen in Parts 2 and 3. And again, he places them himself: “those were faces of people physically present the last 24 to 48 hours of coma.” Real people, in the ICU room, rising out of the muck. Coma.

Bond’s Plea – “He was pleading with me, ‘Dad, you’re going to be okay, Daddy. You’re going to be okay.’ As if somehow that would make it so, and that’s what I sensed was his pleading nature. I didn’t understand the words, but there was another soul out there that needed me, and that’s what drew me back to this world.” Seen in Part 3. His son, at the bedside, speaking words his father heard. This telling adds what happened next: “I started fighting the ventilator. They pulled out the breathing tube. That’s when I said thank you.” A voice in the ICU room, then a body fighting a ventilator. Coma.

The Nightmare – “I was still in for about a 36-hour paranoid delusional ICU psychosis that was just beginning.” Seen in Parts 2 and 3. Two new details here. He says “I knew they were delusional as they were happening,” and “the memories of that 36-hour post-coma ICU psychosis, they vanished within a few weeks.” ICU delirium, the living brain coming back online. Coma.

From Earlier Tellings, Not Repeated Here

Roots overhead. A very long time. Ugly and foreboding. Millions of butterflies. The pounding. Animal faces in the muck. The chant or roar in the muck. The warm summer breeze. The soup of mixed foam. Susan Reintjes.

Fear Coma Experience Tally

This telling: 10 coma elements. 0 new, 10 repeats.

Global total across all tellings so far: 20 coma elements, unchanged.

Near-Death Experience Elements: New

Spiritual Home – “It helped to remind me that this was a spiritual home that I remembered from past soul journeys.” Experiencers describe this again and again: the sense of arriving somewhere they already know, of returning home after a long time away. It’s one of the most consistent reports in clean near-death experience accounts. NDE.

Near-Death Experience Elements: Repeats

The Light Appears – “I was rescued by a slowly spinning white light.” Later: “this spinning melody of light, of musical light.” Seen in Parts 1, 2, and 3. In 2011, this was only a melody. By 2025 it was a white light. Now it’s both at once, “musical light.” NDE.

The Tunnel – “I could conjure up that light portal, go back up into the beautiful Gateway Valley.” Seen in Part 3. NDE.

Hyper-Reality – “It’s a realm of extreme richness and ultra reality.” Seen in Parts 2 and 3. NDE.

The Garden – “I ended up in the Gateway Valley… It had many Earth-like features, but in many ways, it was like Plato’s world of ideals, but for the individual soul.” Seen in Parts 1, 2, and 3, with less physical detail this time and a new philosophical comparison. NDE.

Out of the Body – “In this Gateway Valley, I had no body awareness. I was a speck of awareness.” Seen in Parts 1, 2, and 3. NDE.

Orbs of Light – “Up above were these swooping orbs, angelic choirs.” Seen in Parts 2 and 3. NDE.

The Girl on the Butterfly Wing – “There was a beautiful young woman, sparkling blue eyes, high cheekbones, high forehead, broad smile… every time I passed through that gateway valley, she was there beside me on the butterfly wing, a constant spiritual companion.” Seen in Parts 2 and 3. NDE.

The Telepathic Message – “She never said a word to me. She never had to… her message to me delivered telepathically… ‘You are deeply loved and cherished forever. You have nothing to fear. You are richly cared for.'” Seen in Parts 2 and 3. NDE.

Leaving This Universe – “The next stage was actually witnessing of a collapse of four-dimensional spacetime.” Seen in Parts 1, 2, and 3. NDE.

The Void – “The core was an infinite inky blackness.” Seen in Parts 1, 2, and 3. NDE.

The Presence of God – “Filled to overflowing with that divine love of that God force.” Later: “that higher God force is simply this beautiful golden light of love, unconditional love.” Seen in Parts 1, 2, and 3. NDE.

Oneness – “My very conscious awareness, as I believe it is for us all, is directly sourced in that God force.” Later: “a complete resolution of all dualities… masculine, feminine, dark, light, good, evil… compressed into pure oneness and unconditional love.” Seen in Parts 1, 2, and 3. NDE.

Not Here to Stay – “As I was told every time I entered the core, ‘You’re not here to stay. You’ll be going back.'” Seen in Parts 2 and 3. NDE.

Lessons – “We’ll teach you many things.” Seen in Parts 2 and 3. NDE.

Reincarnation – “Reincarnation and life reviews were crystal clear to me in the living tapestry vision I often describe in the core realm.” Seen in Part 3, where he called it “the Indra’s net vision.” Same lesson, new label. NDE.

No Time on the Other Side – “That spiritual realm is not locked into Earth time.” Seen in Parts 2 and 3. NDE.

From Earlier Tellings, Not Repeated Here

Indescribable colors. The single brilliant orb. Seeing everything. The boundary. Deceased loved ones. As in Part 3, he says the Gateway Valley “is where we reunite with souls of departed loved ones, go through life reviews, plan next incarnations,” but he describes it as what happens there, not as something he experienced.

Near-Death Experience Tally

This telling: 17 NDE elements. 1 new, 16 repeats.

Global total across all tellings so far: 22 NDE elements.

Saturation

This is the point the series was built to reach. Four tellings, spanning 15 years. In this one, every coma element is a repeat, and 16 of 17 NDE elements are repeats. The labels shift from telling to telling (“Indra’s net” becomes “the living tapestry vision,” the dancers become “souls between lives,” the light becomes “musical light”), but the elements underneath the labels stay the same, and they sort into the same two piles every time.

He says himself in this interview that he’s given “thousands of these podcasts.” The structure of his story is locked. Each new telling from here on gets checked against the list, and the list barely moves.

The Doctor on His Own Case

These are the places where Eben Alexander steps out of the experience and analyzes his own case as a neurosurgeon. None of it is coma material, and none of it is NDE material.

His son’s face. This telling contains the most important statement yet in this category. Describing the six faces, he says: “I didn’t see him with my eyes and hear him with my ears. I promise, I was far too gone from this world.” In the same passage, he describes his son Bond running down the hallway after the family conference and pulling his father’s eyelids open: “One eye looking over there. One eye over there, neither pupil working. Anybody in medicine knows that’s a horrible picture of brainstem damage.” His eyes were open. His son’s face was inches away. His son was speaking. And the face he remembers is a 10-year-old boy rising out of the muck, pleading with him in words he heard but couldn’t understand, at the end of a seven-day coma. The neurosurgeon says it didn’t come through his eyes and ears. The framework says it did.

The family conference. On day seven, “the doctors have just held a conference for the family where they said I’ve gone from 10% to 2% chance of survival, no chance of recovery.”

The case report. A September 2018 review of his medical records in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, by Dr. Surbhi Khanna, Lauren Moore, and Bruce Greyson, concluding his brain “was in no shape to be harboring any kind of dream or hallucination,” and the journal’s editors asking the authors to explain his recovery.

The amnesia. “A very atypical feature. I’ve never heard this as severely in anybody else’s NDE.”

The neocortex inventory. Sight, hearing, executive function, memory recall, “sense of smell, of body orientation,” all of it depending on the outer layer of the brain that meningitis destroys.

Memory. “Memories are not even stored in the brain,” based on brain resections and hemispherectomies that don’t erase long-term memories.

Psychedelics. Robin Carhart-Harris’s 2012 psilocybin imaging study at Imperial College London, Roland Griffiths’ pilot studies at Johns Hopkins, and his own participation in a 5-MeO-DMT dose escalation study, after Sam Harris compared his story to a DMT trip. His verdict: the drug shows “the same territory,” but through “a tiny little keyhole.”

The research. Bruce Greyson’s 2021 analysis of almost 700 life reviews: 37 percent covered the entire life, 47 percent were relived as if still ongoing, and about three-quarters were from multiple perspectives. The University of Virginia’s research on more than 2,500 children with past-life memories, with more than 1,700 cases solved.

The physics. Neurons as “quantum computers,” Werner Heisenberg, John Wheeler, the 2022 Nobel Prize for quantum entanglement, and Bernard Carr’s work on higher temporal dimensions.

Repeats from earlier tellings: meningitis as “a perfect model for human death,” the six faces as a clock placing “the vast majority of the spiritual experience” between days one and four or five, and the return of his memories within two months, “even more complete than they had been before.”

What This Telling Shows

Almost 18 years after his coma, Eben Alexander describes 10 coma elements and 17 near-death experience elements. None of the coma elements are new. One NDE element is new: the sense of a spiritual home he remembered.

The earthworm view, the muck, the melody, the butterflies, the dancing crowd, the hymns, the six faces, his son’s voice, and 36 hours of ICU psychosis are all back. So are the light, the tunnel, the garden, the girl and her telepathic message, the void, the presence of God, oneness, and the promise that he would go back.

Both sources are present in a single account. By definition, an account containing both coma elements and near-death experience elements is a Welded NDE.

Four tellings in, across 15 years, the result is the same. Eben Alexander had a Welded NDE. The bricks are starting to repeat.

Global totals after four tellings: 20 coma elements and 22 near-death experience elements.
