Analyzing Eben Alexander, Part 3: NDE Journey (2025): a laptop showing an Eben Alexander interview beside three stacked case folders, with a running total of 20 coma elements and 21 near-death experience elements across all tellings

Analyzing Eben Alexander, Part 3: NDE Journey (2025)

A Change in Direction

When I started this series – Analyzing Eben Alexander – I planned to work through his tellings in strict chronological order, oldest first. I covered his 2011 appearance on Through the Wormhole in Part 1, and his November 2011 Skeptiko interview in Part 2.

I’m dropping the strict chronology. The older material is scattered, hard to find, and often hard to access. His two 2010 presentations may not exist in any recorded form. The newer material is everywhere, in full video, with clean transcripts. Fighting to dig up the old stuff costs a lot of time and gains nothing.

It doesn’t change the analysis. What matters is the telling itself: the coma markers and the near-death experience markers inside the narrative. A marker from 2025 sorts the same way as a marker from 2011. New or old, every telling goes through the same process, every element gets logged as new or already seen, and the global tally keeps growing. From here on, I’ll take the material as it comes.

The Source

On December 4, 2025, the YouTube channel NDE Journey posted “Harvard Neurosurgeon Died and Discovered Consciousness Isn’t the Brain,” a 20-minute interview with Eben Alexander. As of this writing, it has more than 574,000 views. My analysis is based on the transcript of the video.

This is Eben Alexander 17 years after his coma, after three books and hundreds of tellings. The story is smooth, polished, and well rehearsed. That makes it a good test. If the framework holds on his most refined version, it holds.

The method hasn’t changed. If it’s something a physical body does, feeling, hearing, smelling, or sensing the passage of time, it comes from the coma. If it’s something only a soul free of the body does, it comes from the near-death experience. Part 1 explains the standards in full.

Fear Coma Experience Elements: New

Editorial Comment: When I say the elements are “new” I mean – new to this analytical project. Eben Alexander has been saying the same thing over and over again, hundreds of times. This effort is designed to collect, catalogue, and analyze all of the individual elements. So, new to the project only.

The Dancing Crowd – “There were thousands of beings dancing in this meadow. Joy and festivity everywhere… there were, you know, dogs, dogs jumping and children playing.” When experiencers describe reuniting with deceased relatives or pets, it’s a small number of known souls: a grandmother, a father, a childhood dog. This is something else. Thousands of strangers dancing, random dogs jumping, children at play. A festival. A crowd scene in a park. This is his brain building heaven for him out of the earthly picture it already had. Coma material.

The Praying Beings – “Thousands of beings going off into the murky distance around me. Heads bowed, some holding candles, and they were murmuring this kind of prayer and energy that was coming to me.” Murmuring is a sound, heard with ears. Bowed heads, candles, and prayer are church imagery. Earlier in this same interview, he describes his adoptive father’s “very profound belief in God and the power of prayer,” and the pocket Bible his father carried through the Second World War, which he still keeps at his bedside. His brain had that picture in the library, and it used it. Coma material.

Bond’s Plea – “Of those six faces, the last one I saw was of my 10-year-old son, Bond. I remember his face and his pleading with me, ‘Daddy, you’re gonna be okay. Daddy, you’re gonna be okay.’ Now, I didn’t understand the words.” His son, physically standing in the ICU room, speaking words his father heard but couldn’t understand. Sound, from the real world, reaching a living brain in a hospital bed. And he says this is “what drove me back to this world. That’s what brought me back.” The trigger for his return was a voice in the ICU. Coma material.

Fear Coma Experience Elements: Repeats

The Earthworm’s Eye View – “I just assumed that that earthworm eye view, the kind of ugly unresponsive realm, was the way things are.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. Coma.

Ugly and Foreboding – “The kind of ugly unresponsive realm.” In Part 1, he called the underground place ugly and foreboding. In Part 2, he said he wasn’t alarmed there. Here, “ugly” is back, alongside “something I accepted.” Coma.

The Melody – “It’s a perfect musical melody… That portal was not just this light spinning, but it was also the beautiful music that I heard.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. Sound, coma. In this telling, he adds an explanation for the music himself, covered at the end of the article.

The Butterfly Wing – “That speck of awareness in the gateway valley was riding on a butterfly wing.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. Coma.

Millions of Butterflies – “There were millions of other butterflies looping and spiraling in vast formations.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. Coma.

Hymns – “Up above were swooping orbs of angelic choirs… and they were emanating chants and anthems, hymns that would just thunder through my awareness.” Seen in Part 2. Music, heard. The orbs belong to the NDE, and I’ll cover them there. The hymns belong to the coma. Same sentence, two sources, welded together.

The Six Faces – “Six faces that kind of bubble up out of the muck. They’d say a few words that I couldn’t understand because of my amnesia… and then they disappear in the muck.” Seen in Part 2, where they “boil up out of the muck.” Now they “bubble up,” same muck. And in this telling, he adds the detail that settles it: “Those faces were of loved ones and friends, very close friends, who were in the ICU room the last 24 to 48 hours of coma.” Real people, in the ICU room, beside his living body, rising out of the muck. The muck is the coma, and he places it there himself.

The Nightmare – “For the next 36 hours after waking up I was in and out of this crazy paranoid delusional psychotic nightmare… it was very frightening for my family to see all that.” Seen in Part 2. This time he gives it a length, 36 hours, and adds the word “psychotic.” ICU delirium, a living brain coming back online. Coma.

From Earlier Tellings, Not Repeated Here

Roots overhead. Gross and muddy. A very long time. The pounding. Animal faces in the muck. The chant or roar in the muck. The warm summer breeze. The soup of mixed foam. Susan Reintjes.

Fear Coma Experience Tally

This telling: 11 coma elements. 3 new, 8 repeats.

Global total across all tellings so far: 20 coma elements.

Near-Death Experience Elements: New

The Tunnel – “This slowly spinning pure white light coming out of the darkness, it then opened like a portal, a wormhole up into this rich ultra real gateway valley.” Later: “I ascended through yet another light portal.” A passage of light, opening out of the darkness and carrying him from one place to the next. People who have crossed over call it a tunnel. He calls it a portal and a wormhole. Same element, different words. Near-death experience.

The Boundary – “You often hear the discussion of NDEs that there’s a boundary and you sense a boundary that maybe you cannot pass or if you do pass it you’re not going back. And I feel like I glimpsed that boundary in a sense in the next level of my journey.” The border between this life and the next, the line you can’t cross and still come back. One of the classic near-death experience elements.

Reincarnation – “That’s what I call the Indra’s net vision. And that was one that absolutely showed me this beautiful fabric of interwoven threads. And the interweaving threads was actually like our breathing and like our incarnation and then between lives… this journey towards ascendance towards oneness with the divine but that it can’t happen in one physical lifetime.” Being shown that souls return for more than one lifetime is a recurring lesson in near-death experiences. “Indra’s net” is his own label, borrowed from Hindu and Buddhist philosophy. The lesson underneath it is NDE.

Near-Death Experience Elements: Repeats

The Light Appears – “I was rescued by this slowly spinning white light that came towards me.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. And here’s a change worth noting. In 2011, the spinning thing was only a melody, and he never used the word “light.” In 2025, it’s “this slowly spinning pure white light.” The light that hid inside the music in Part 1 now has its own name. NDE.

Out of the Body – “I had no body awareness at all during any part of this. I was just a speck of awareness.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. NDE.

Hyper-Reality – “This rich ultra real gateway valley.” Later: “It was way too real to be real,” and “that world is sharp, clear, detailed, meaningful, powerful, transformational.” Seen in Part 2. NDE.

The Garden – “Down below there was this verdant fertile meadow surrounded by an incredible forest, sparkling waterfalls and crystal blue pools.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. NDE.

Indescribable Colors – “Vast formations of colors beyond the rainbow.” Seen in Part 2. NDE.

The Girl on the Butterfly Wing – “There was a beautiful young woman beside me on the butterfly wing. She had sparkling blue eyes, high forehead… her face was framed by her lovely light brown hair.” Seen in Part 2, now with more physical detail. NDE.

The Telepathic Message – “She looked at me with a look of pure love and her message was delivered telepathically. She never had to say a word… ‘You are deeply loved and cherished forever. You have nothing to fear. You are richly cared for. You can do no wrong.'” Seen in Part 2. NDE.

Lessons – “I recognized in this gateway valley that the rules of ideal function and existence here were of love, compassion, kindness, mercy, acceptance, taking care of all of our fellow beings.” Seen in Part 2. NDE.

No Time on the Other Side – “That spiritual realm, that’s a timeless realm. And so there’s no limitation of earth time, no clock ticking in this gateway valley.” Seen in Part 2. NDE.

Arcs of Light, Now Orbs – “Swooping orbs of angelic choirs, orbs that seemed to have a pure spiritual essence.” In Part 2, these were “arks of silver and gold light.” Now they’re orbs. Beings of light, either way. NDE.

Leaving This Universe – “I remember seeing all of four-dimensional spacetime collapsing down.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. NDE.

The Void – “The core was an infinite inky blackness.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. NDE.

The Presence of God – “Filled to overflowing with that divine unconditional love of the God force.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. NDE.

Oneness – “I came to acknowledge and recognize that my very conscious awareness was directly linked to that God force. So in other words, never could I or any other soul be distant from that force.” Seen in Parts 1 and 2. NDE.

Not Here to Stay – “Every time I entered the core I was told we’ll teach you many things. You’re not here to stay.” Seen in Part 2. NDE.

From Earlier Tellings, Not Repeated Here

The brilliant orb of light. Seeing everything. Deceased loved ones. In this telling, he says the gateway valley is “where we would reunite with souls of departed loved ones” and “where we would go through life reviews,” but he describes it as what happens there, not as something he experienced.

Near-Death Experience Tally

This telling: 18 NDE elements. 3 new, 15 repeats.

Global total across all tellings so far: 21 NDE elements.

Back and Forth, Again

The cycling from Part 2 is back, and it’s grown. In 2011, he went back and forth “three or four times.” In 2025: “I would then tumble back down to that earthworm eye view and I went through many cycles of this. So I cycled through these realms multiple times.”

Then the cycling stops. The melody no longer opens the portal, and he’s “stuck back in that earthworm eye view.” Everything that happens after that happens at the bottom, in the muck: the praying beings with their candles, the six faces from the ICU room, and his son pleading with him. That’s the coma, at the end of the coma, and he tells it in that order.

He even names it himself: “It was a very detailed and elaborate coma journey.”

The Doctor on His Own Case

These are the places where Eben Alexander steps out of the experience and analyzes his own case as a neurosurgeon. None of it is coma material, and none of it is NDE material.

New in this telling:

The timeline. “Those faces were of loved ones and friends… who were in the ICU room the last 24 to 48 hours of coma. So very importantly they helped me to time that the vast majority of the spiritual journey had to happen between days one and four or one and five of the seven-day coma.” He uses the faces as a clock, and in doing so places the muck in the ICU room during the final days of the coma.

The music, explained. “Music in that realm is an ideal form of music. It’s not limited by four-dimensional spacetime and the physiology of our ears and how they normally acquire sound.” The doctor, explaining why a sound with no ears to hear it isn’t a sound.

The ER. Dr. Laura Potter’s lumbar puncture, with “thick white pus under pressure,” and her estimate of “maybe a 10% chance of survival.”

The Glasgow Coma Scale. Scores of “five, six, and seven. Anything below nine is deep coma.”

The consultants. “None of the consultants up and down the eastern seaboard had ever heard of a case that severe.”

The records review. Going back to the hospital in the weeks after, “going through medical records, talking over with my doctors, going through CT and MRI scans, neurologic exams, Glasgow coma scales.”

His memory. “The memories were more complete after the coma than they had been before the coma.”

The research. Bruce Greyson’s figures on life reviews: a complete review in one-third of cases, with about three-quarters describing it “from the perspective of all involved.”

Repeats from Part 2: meningitis as “a perfect model for human death,” the neocortex “overrun by an extremely aggressive E. coli bacterial meningoencephalitis,” his amnesia during the coma, his spinal fluid glucose of 1 against a normal of 80 and a severe case of 20, and his doctors telling him “a dying brain plays all kinds of tricks.”

What This Telling Shows

Seventeen years after his coma, in his most polished telling so far, Eben Alexander describes 11 coma elements and 18 near-death experience elements. Three of the coma elements are new: the dancing crowd, the praying beings with their candles, and his son’s plea from the ICU. Three of the NDE elements are new: the tunnel, the boundary, and reincarnation.

The core of his near-death experience holds steady. Fifteen of the eighteen NDE elements repeat earlier tellings. The coma side holds steady too, with the earthworm view, the melody, the butterflies, the hymns, the six faces, and the nightmare all back again.

Both sources are present in a single account. By definition, an account containing both coma elements and near-death experience elements is a Welded NDE.

Three tellings in, across 14 years, the result is the same. Eben Alexander had a Welded NDE. Every telling adds more bricks to the building, and every brick sorts into the same two piles.

Global totals after three tellings: 20 coma elements and 21 near-death experience elements.
