A You’re Going to Die Someday Right review from a Kindle reader: “clear, analytical, and surprisingly comforting.” My commentary on what they caught.
“Instead of treating NDEs as mystical stories or trying to fit them into a particular belief system, Don Winner does something refreshingly different: he treats them as data.”
I’ve noticed something reading the reviews as they come in — and yes, I analyze my own reviews the same way I analyze NDE accounts, because of course I do. Different readers, different backgrounds, no contact with each other, and they keep converging on the same observation: he treats them as data. In my line of work, when independent sources converge on the same conclusion, that means the signal is real. The book is doing what I built it to do.
But this reviewer went a step further than most:
“Winner doesn’t try to convince you of anything… He simply lays out what people report, shows how those reports align, and lets the reader draw their own conclusions. The consistency of the data is the story.”
That last line is the whole book in eight words. I spent 426 pages making that argument; this reader compressed it into a sentence I wish I’d written. They also caught the two structural pillars most reviews skip — that afterlife belief grew out of prehistoric lived experience rather than doctrine, and that modern resuscitation medicine is generating more NDE data every day than any point in human history. When a reader plays back your thesis more cleanly than your own elevator pitch, they didn’t skim. They read.
And then there’s the phrase I didn’t expect:
“Clear, analytical, and surprisingly comforting… perfect for readers who want insight without dogma, curiosity without fear.”
Surprisingly comforting. I’ll take that. Nobody sets out to write a comforting book about death by way of intelligence tradecraft — but if you follow the data where it goes, that’s where it goes.
